My direction towards clothing is a force which predates my ability to form conscious thought. A fact of my exsistence so intimately tied to who I am that I wouldn’t be myself without it.
I want to know why I love it so much because it will tell me more about who I am, I think.
Clothing is a dear dear friend we have with us always. We shape our clothes through wear and our clothes shape us through visually defining who we are and what we care about.
I am currently reading Fashioning Idenity by Maria Mackinney-Valentin
I have been sewing with a sewing machine since I was 10 years of age. Crafting is very much enjoyed by me.
I do metalwork sometimes
I would say I am most proud of the wood working projects I have done at Emily Carr. They are always done in a group and I find that to be the most exciting part. I have my best ideas with other people.
I’ve worked at a thrift store for the past couple years. There, I learned a lot about quality, contruction methods and how items wear over time.
I find pattern making to be one of the most interesting parts of making clothing. There is the most control over the what the final thing ends up looking like. I love the iterating process, following along each prototype, keeping lists of potencial problems and updates I have done, like a scientist making a hypothesis. In time, arriving at the solution.
